Abstract

This research is the process of designing the application of public space art reliefs in the lobby of the Isola UPI Bandung building. The art of the public space uses the meaning of Sundanese symbols taking the theme of the relationship between Science and Nature. The Sundanese cosmological simbol is depicted with an abstraction simbol of the tree of life which means about the relationship between the cosmos and Sundanese cosmology. The creation of the works presented in the Isola lobby was motivated by the need for a narrow space quality gap in the lobby space which was unable to lift the aesthetic quality of the magnificent Isola building. The purpose of this research is to produce a study of public art works of art in interior design to improve the quality of space values that can elevate the image of the isola building as a simbol of the authority of UPI Higher Education. The resulting design has a novelty value that is offered, namely producing an innovative work of public art that has not been made before that is able to elevate the value of space using thematic reliefs on the Isola building, by elevating or loading the local identity on the public artwork. The research objective was achieved through a qualitative approach through a planning method process which was then carried out by interior design design through the stages of observation and point of view analysis as well as the proportions and atmosphere of the existing space by conducting surveys/direct field observations. With this public art work of art, it can elevate the quality of the space and have a meaningful value. In addition, the resulting space can provide self-identity and provide the authority of a large UPI Higher Education. At the end of the process, the design is produced in the form of a colored relief work measuring 2m x 3m, which is applied to the backdrop of the reception wall of the Isola UPI Bandung building.
