1          Introduction

The Indonesian Journal of Design is an open-access scholarly journal publishing original research, conceptual explorations, case studies, and critical reflections in the field of design—including graphic design, product design, interior design, fashion design, service design, interaction design, design history, design theory, and related creative practices.

Publication in this journal signifies that all authors have approved the manuscript and agree to comply with these policies. Violations may result in rejection or post-publication retraction.

We uphold integrity, transparency, fairness, and respect for intellectual property. All submissions must be:

  • Accurate, balanced, and evidence-informed
  • Clearly distinguish fact from opinion
  • Produced through ethical and legitimate means
  • Corrected or retracted if found to be misleading, harmful, or inaccurate

2          Author Affiliation

  1. Authors must declare the institutional affiliation where the design research or project was developed.
  2. Affiliations must belong to accredited institutions or recognized organizations.
  3. At least one author must meet this criterion.
  4. If an author has changed institutions, list the affiliation at the time of the work, with a note on current affiliation if desired.
  5. Independent researchers without formal affiliation must explicitly state this status.

3          Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The Indonesian Journal of Design permits the responsible and transparent use of generative AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, DALL·E) under the following conditions:

3.1         Prohibited Uses

  1. AI must not be listed as an author.
  2. AI must not generate core visual content (e.g., illustrations, mockups, prototypes, or data visuals) without significant human modification, critical evaluation, and verification.
  3. AI must not replace human-led creative reasoning, conceptual analysis, or design interpretation.

3.2         Permitted Uses

  1. Ideation and brainstorming
  2. Language editing (especially for non-native speakers)
  3. Literature organization
  4. Coding assistance (if applicable)

3.3         3.3. Transparency Requirement

Authors must include a statement in the Methodology or Acknowledgements section specifying:

  1. Full name and version of the AI tool used
  2. Purpose of use
  3. Specific parts of the manuscript or visuals assisted/generated by AI

4          Originality and Plagiarism

Plagiarism in any form—textual, visual, conceptual, or procedural—is strictly prohibited. This includes:

  1. Copying design works without attribution
  2. Using logos, photographs, illustrations, or fonts without permission
  3. Replicating design processes, theoretical frameworks, or sketches without citation
  4. All submissions are screened via Crossref Similarity Check. Violations will be handled per COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidelines.

5          Authorship Criteria

Authorship is granted only to individuals who made substantial contributions to:

  1. Conceptualization or framing of the design inquiry
  2. Development of design solutions or visual explorations
  3. Critical analysis of the design process or outcome
  4. Drafting or significant revision of the manuscript
  5. Final approval of the published version

Contributors who do not meet these criteria should be acknowledged in the Acknowledgements section, including:

  1. Technical assistants
  2. Translators
  3. Professional editors or writers-for-hire
  4. AI tools (if used)

6          Competing Interests

Authors must disclose any financial or non-financial competing interests, such as:

  1. Commercial collaborations with brands or companies
  2. Ownership of shares or royalties from designed products
  3. Relationships with sponsoring organizations
  4. Ideological, political, or religious beliefs influencing design interpretation

If none exist, include the statement:

“The authors declare no competing interests.”

7          Data and Visual Material Availability

In design contexts, “data” includes:

  1. Conceptual sketches
  2. Digital files (AI, PSD, CAD, Figma, etc.)
  3. Process documentation photos
  4. Physical/digital prototypes
  5. User interviews or field notes

Authors are encouraged to:

  1. Archive supporting materials in open repositories (e.g., Zenodo, Figshare)
  2. Provide access to reviewers upon request
  3. Explain limitations to sharing (e.g., due to copyright or privacy)

If materials contain identifiable individuals (e.g., user photos), written consent for publication must be obtained and retained.

8          Research Ethics in Design

8.1         Human Participation

If research involves users, communities, or participants:

  1. Ethical approval from an institutional review board (if available) is recommended
  2. Language must avoid stigmatization or stereotyping
  3. Informed consent (written or recorded) is required for participation and publication
  4. Participant identities must be anonymized unless explicit permission is granted

8.2. Research in Local or Indigenous Communities

Researchers are encouraged to:

  1. Involve community members in the co-design process
  2. Seek permission from local leaders or cultural authorities
  3. Respect cultural values and visual sensitivities
  4. Avoid “parachute research” (extractive, non-collaborative approaches)

9          Use of Third-Party Materials

Authors are solely responsible for securing permissions to use:

  1. Images, photographs, illustrations
  2. Logos and trademarks
  3. Commercial fonts
  4. Media excerpts (advertisements, film, music)
  5. Artworks or designs created by others

Exceptions apply only for:

Fair use in academic critique or commentary

  1. Openly licensed materials (CC BY, public domain)
  2. Proof of permission must be provided upon editorial request.

10     Copyright and Licensing

Articles in the Indonesian Journal of Design are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC BY 4.0), allowing:

  1. Sharing, adaptation, and commercial use
  2. Provided proper attribution is given to the original authors and source
  3. Copyright remains with the authors or their institutions.

Supporting materials (data, visuals) are encouraged to use CC0 (public domain dedication) to maximize reuse potential.

11     Peer Review Process

The journal employs open post-publication peer review:

  1. Articles are published immediately with a permanent DOI
  2. Reviewers are invited after publication
  3. Review reports, reviewer identities, and revised versions are published openly
  4. Authors may revise their work based on feedback, accompanied by an Amendment Statement detailing changes.

12     Corrections, Expressions of Concern, and Retractions

Corrections                         : for minor errors

Expressions of Concern  : if misconduct is suspected but unconfirmed

Retractions                         : for confirmed plagiarism, fabrication, image manipulation, or serious ethical breaches

Decisions follow COPE guidelines.

13     Preprint Policy

Manuscripts previously posted on preprint servers (e.g., OSF, arXiv) are welcome.

Include the preprint DOI in the submission

Upon acceptance, update the preprint with:

“This article has been accepted for publication in the Indonesian Journal of Design.”

14     Reporting Guidelines

Authors are encouraged to follow relevant reporting standards, such as:

CARE (for design case studies)

SAGER (for gender and identity reporting)
